Family Photos can be stressful, but they don't have to be!
Even as a photographer myself, I still find myself getting nervous when it is time to have my family in front of the camera. There is a lot more to a session than just showing up at your session time. Location, outfits, timing...it all plays a part to make your session look beautiful. But you also want to look like you. You don't want to look fake or posed. That's where a good photographer will be helpful.
Choose the photographer with the photos that make you feel.
If your vibe is posed photos with everyone looking at the camera, find a photographer with galleries that fit that style. If you want photos that show emotion, little details and real family moments happening then you need to find a photographer that will deliver that. While you can get an idea of their work through what they post on social media, ask to see a few galleries. You will get the full idea of their true work that way. And while you might think you are asking too many questions, ask them all! With all the questions you ask, we are able to get a clearer idea of what you want out of a session. Then we can deliver a session you will love to look back on for years to come.
Next up, the little details that make a big difference.
Each photographer will have colors that work better with their editing style. Never be afraid to ask them about which colors they suggest, but also remember to keep your outfits looking like you for your photos. You do not want to look at your photos on the wall and not recognize the people in them. Make them you!
Your location also matters! If you are not a city person, you probably wouldn't look back at images with a city backdrop and love them as much. Photographers spend so much time scouting locations, so we are available to help you find a locations suited to you that will look beautiful in your photos as well. Personally, I love getting invited into the places that your family loves and lives in, whether that is at your home or just a spot you find happiness in. It is the biggest honor to be invited into your lives!
Basically, plan to have fun!
When you have planned and prepped, the only thing left to do is have fun and enjoy your session. Love on your people. Be in the moment. Embrace any chaos that might happen. Kids might have an excess of energy, wardrobes might malfunction or your kid will fall the day before photos and have a scratch on their face.
It is what it is, and it will all be so great! Family photos should reflect your family. And the more you can not stress over them, the more you will love those images and the better the kids will go with the flow!
